VegfestUK Brighton 2019 will feature a brand-new series of talks and workshops focusing on building a powerful, anti-speciesist Mass Movement, created and led by new grassroots collective Animal Think Tank. The event will take place on the 23rd and 24th March at the Brighton Centre.
The Movement Building stream will platform people from across the Animal Justice Movement to highlight and share best practice to provide people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to work together and achieve transformative change for other animals. The approaches to social change we will share are inspired by successful social movements like The Indian Independence Movement, The U.S. Civil Rights Movement, The Colour Revolutions of Eastern Europe and many more.
Mark Westcombe from Animal Think Tank said “these social justice movements had dramatic impact because they took a movement building approach. They worked to mobilise and empower hundreds of thousands of people to participate in popular movements which shifted public opinion and/or pressured governments to grant rights and liberties to oppressed groups. By learning their methods the Animal Justice movement can build the power to end animal farming and other forms of animal exploitation.”
The event is organised by a new grassroots collective of volunteers called Animal Think Tank. Animal Think Tank’s mission is to support the building of a broad-based anti-speciesist movement that has the power and resilience to ensure all individual animals have their rights to life, liberty and security of person protected in law and respected by society. We aim to achieve this by developing the strategic direction, capacity and innovation of the individuals, groups and organisations working for animal justice in their diverse ways.
The Movement Building stream will feature a diverse range of speakers and talk titles include: “How can we build a powerful mass movement for animal justice?”; “Why Disrupt?”; “Ending Our Speciesism”; “The Power of Our Narratives”; “Let’s Get Strategic! Why Nonviolent Resistance Works” and; “How to Organise Local Groups to Win Campaigns“ among others.
Tim Barford from VegfestUK said: “We’re thrilled to welcome the emerging Animal Think Tank to Brighton this March, and with so much attention and discussion currently surrounding vegan activism – not only from within the vegan circles, but from mainstream media too – it’s a timely arrival to see this development. The vegan movement and especially vegan activists have at times lacked guidance, support, a decent framework and the encouragement to analyse, self-reflect, learn and improve, and the advent of the Animal Think Tank can help change that and assist in honing the vegan activists movement into a sharper and more effective campaign for the animals, the planet and the people.”
Brighton Vegfest will also feature streams on Radical Veganism hosted by Christopher Sebastian, Plant-Based Health hosted by Plant-Based Health Professionals, Vegan Activist Hub hosted by Jeremy Hess, and Veganic Growing hosted by Vegan Organic Network.
Advance tickets for the event are available at www.brighton.vegfest.co.uk/tickets, with a BUY ONE GET ONE FREE special offer running until the end of February.

On each day after Brighton Vegfest, Animal Think Tank are organising an informal session where they will share a bit about who they are, what they’re up to, their plans to support the movement and how you can join in. They’ll start with a short introduction to their work, followed by a question and answer session and some socialising.

Event: Free Movement Building Training 10-11 August 2019
This training is for people in the animal justice movement who want to think big and get inspired. Drawn from cutting-edge research on mass movements and civil disobedience, this training will introduce some key concepts, principles and strategies for building a powerful mass movement that can achieve transformative change for other animals.
Day 1: Introduction to Movement Building
This training will introduce you to different theories of change to help you understand how social change happens. It will look at different organising traditions and see how they can be used to make your groups more effective. The training will introduce you to a strategic planning framework which we will practice using to see how we can achieve big long-term goals.
Day 2: Advanced Training in Movement Building
This training is for those who have attended Day 1 and want to get a deeper understanding of movement building. It will look at how to campaign effectively and make use of a wide range of tactics. It will explore ways to grow the movement and build power over time. You will have the opportunity to plan and execute an action in groups and come back together to share your experiences. The training will also look at the natural cycle of social movements so we can see where we fit into the bigger picture.
The training will be participatory and interactive. There will be lots of opportunities for group work, discussion and hands-on activities to help us share, learn from and build on each others’ experiences and put ideas into practice. The training is free of charge and open to those at all levels of knowledge and experience.
The training will take place in London, but the location is still to be confirmed.
