Takeaways

Vegan Animal Companion Diets

– At least 11 studies of dogs and 3 of cats, have shown that health outcomes achieved by nutritionally sound vegan diets, are at least as good as those achieved by meat-based pet foods

– Pet food consumes 9% of all livestock animals globally, and 20% in nations with high pet ownership such as the US.

– If all pet dogs were transitioned on to nutritionally sound vegan diets, it would spare more greenhouse gases than produced by all of the UK, and would save sufficient food energy to feed the entire EU population. 8 billion land animals would also be spared from slaughter annually.

– Such factors are driving a rapid expansion of the vegan pet food sector, which is estimated to be worth USD 26 billion by 2033 for vegan dog food alone.  www.sustainablepetfood.info.
