My name is Dr Buvana Dwarakanathan. My qualifications are MBBS, DCH, FRCPCH. I am a Consultant Paediatric Intensivist at St George’s Hospital, Tooting, London for the last 6 years. I have trained both in India and the United Kingdom.
I was a vegetarian initially and subsequently turned vegan two years ago, when I realised the horrific cruelty involved in dairy and egg production. I would say that turning vegan is one of the best decisions I have ever made. “Nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time as come” and I definitely believe that the time has come to adopt a diet beneficial to the animals, oneself and the planet.
Healthcare professionals should play a critical role in promoting healthier food options and reversing the trend towards greater animal product consumption. This should be done as advocates, providers, and as role models. Importantly, empathy should extend to all the inhabitants of this planet and shouldn’t be restricted to only humans, as we are all here to fulfil a biological imperative.
