Jen Deighan-Schenk

We The Free's Community Manager

Jen has been deeply immersed in the animal rights movement since going vegan in 2017, engaging in various forms of activism. Her dedication to the cause has led her to work as a whistleblower, investigator, and animal rescuer, risking her liberty to speak up for animals and expose injustices behind closed doors. Since 2021, Jen has worked with We The Free, a vegan street outreach organization with more than 140 teams in 25 countries. She currently manages WTF’s training programs, community health, and campaigns globally. Jen deeply believes that without a cohesive community, our movement crumbles. Her primary focus is to equip activists with the necessary skills needed to foster a positive community, enabling people to feel empowered to do impactful work for animals.

Conflict Resolution for Animal Liberation

If you’ve been an animal advocate for a while, chances are you’ve witnessed the far-reaching consequences of infighting and toxic communication that is endemic in our movement. In this workshop hosted by Jen Deighan-Schenk of We The Free, we will present the findings from our research into the aftermath of conflicts within multiple animal rights organizations, addressing complexities and persistent challenges.

Drawing from our own organizational experiences, we candidly discuss the impact of conflicts on advocacy efforts and team cohesion. Offering practical strategies that have proven effective, together we will workshop to explore areas where challenges persist and identify innovative solutions.

Animals Rights & Human Rights

Recent surveys amongst vegan activists suggests the movement is currently spilt down the middle on this contentious topic – should human rights be a part of animal rights, or should we be an ‘animals only’ movement? This constructive supportive panel looks at different viewpoints, with a view to seeking learning outcomes and understanding different positions, and increasing the peace.

Takeaways

” This panel will explore the intersection of animal and human rights, addressing how to prioritize animal liberation while ensuring safety, resolving conflicts, and balancing inclusivity.” – Jen Deighan – Schenk

”To find unity between 2 sides of this issue while acknowledging some of the complications of some of the more ambitious and well-meaning goals of intersectional activists” – David Ramms
