John Curtin

activist/campaigner Camp Beagle

John Curtin has dedicated over 40 years to campaigning for animals, from anti-fur, to live exports, hunt sabotage, dog rescue, greyhound racing, and many other causes. However, much of his work has focussed on protesting against animal testing. He has raided laboratories and breeders and served prison sentences for liberating animals back in the 80’s and 90’s. From the start of his campaigning career, he has specialised in giving talks, and speeches, speaking to the press and making films and videos on animal issues. He is the author of Jill’s Film, a documentary commemorating 10 years of her killing whilst protesting against live exports.

Sole Iriart has been involved in animal liberation activism since the mid-90s when she moved from Spain to the UK and learned about veganism and the exploitation of animals. She began her activism by protesting against Huntingdon Life Science, the largest animal contract laboratory in the UK, and against farms breeding animals for vivisection. She has also been involved in campaigns against anti-fur, and greyhound racing, and has been active as a hunt saboteur, cat rescuer, and investigator. She is a trustee member for Freedom for Animals, a charity dedicated to ending the captivity of wild animals in zoos, aquariums, circuses, and other facilities.

Since the summer of 2021, they both have been key participants of Camp Beagle, a protest camp outside MBR Acres, an industrial beagle breeder in the UK.

Campaign Spotlight - Camp Beagle

Camp Beagle is the world’s longest-running, permanent grassroots animal rights protest camp. We are physically camped outside MBR Acres in Cambridgeshire, a dog breeding factory, supplying over 2000 beagle puppies yearly to laboratories in the UK and abroad for animal testing.
The Camp has been running 24/7 since the summer of 2021 working tirelessly on an exposure and pressure campaign to shut down MBR Acres.

Our campaign revolves around three key activities:

1. WE INVESTIGATE the hidden secrets of MBR and gather evidence on the suffering of the MBR beagles.
2. WE EXPOSE their secrets, far and wide, to raise public awareness of the cruelty of animal testing and the existence of scientifically superior non-animal methods.
3. WE BUILD POLITICAL PRESSURE to urge politicians to change legislation
to end animal testing and introduce Non-Animal Methods.

Come to hear what Camp Beagle is doing to save the MBR beagles and end animal testing and how you can get involved.

How we can all contribute to ending animal testing

Brief look at the history of the antivivisection movement in the UK highlighting some effective tactics previously used, a benefits and limitations evaluation of different strategies available to fight animal testing, and a discussion on how we can all contribute to the fight to end animal testing.
The workshop will explore both individual actions and campaign strategies; and facilitate a discussion on how different campaigning approaches can complement and support each other to strengthen the antivivisection movement as a whole.
