Rebecca Ahimsa-Rae

Activist & director of Garden Guardians

As a vegan animal rights activist, I have spent the past 10 years of my life looking for ways I can do my bit to help bring about a more compassionate world for all beings. I started Garden Guardians several years ago in response to the onslaught against the nature I was witnessing just outside my front door. The more I looked, the more I could see how conventional methods used in gardens and shared spaces were more about destroying than about cultivating life with poisoning, burning & cutting down being the norm. My aim is to help people shift their perspectives away from the idea that we are the owners of the land, towards embracing the concept of custodianship, with an emphasis on the responsibility we all have to care for the natural world and all the beings we share her with. I want to help create havens for nature in gardens and my hope is that if we can see the personhood of the smallest of animals, particularly those we have traditionally thought of as ‘undesirable’, then we can move away from the human-centric way of thinking that has proliferated in the world, and move towards a more compassionate way of being.

Rewilding and Restoring Natural Habitats

Rewilding is a popular solution to the climate and biodiversity crisis. It provides hope for decarbonisation, while also returning land back to animals. Equally, rewilding needs vast amounts of land and is critically bound up with the need to transition to a plant-based food system.

Why then are vegan activists and organisations avoiding the rewilding message? And can we hope to achieve animal freedom without first restoring ecosystems?

In this discussion, we will delve into the root of Britain’s nature crisis and tackle difficult questions on nature’s complexity and wild animal suffering. Only together, through this nuance, can we begin to develop a vision for a new world, a world of animal freedom.
